Doctors' Names & More Aptonyms

One morning, my radio partner, Bob Middleton a k a Bob Walker, was reminiscing about his proctologist.

Out of the blue, just because I liked to watch him fidget, I adlibbed, "And what was his name?"

Without missing a beat, Bob said, "Dr. Gloves Moonman."

After a full minute and much laughable effort later, I composed myself and we were able to continue.

What's an Aptonym?:

It turns out the perfect mating of a person's name and his occupation is termed an "aptonym" or "aptronym." The Canadian Aptonym Centre adds "'aptonym' is a compound word which consists of the adjective 'apt' (from Latin via Middle English) meaning 'exactly suitable, or appropriate.' The second part of this word comes from the Greek 'onuma' ('name')."

Prescription for Puns:

We've located two mammoth lists of real people and their jobs. Among them, there's Dr. Charles Butts, a spokesman for an anti-smoking lobby, and a circumcision expert, Offa Peanis.

Don't miss The Doctors' Names List for more real name fun. There's veterinarian Dr. Render, urologist Dr. Manzone, podiatrist Dr. Smellsey, and many more too naughty to repeat. Right, Dr. Beavers?
